Purple Coneflower (Echinacea) Penstemmon, Russian Sage (Perovskia). Freely self-seeds if at least some of the seed heads are left in place. DEER WILL EAT JUST ABOUT ANYTHING if conditions are harsh and they are very hungry. If soil retains excess moisture in winter, plants may succumb to root and crown diseases. Easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Echinacea purpurea matures to 4′ in height.
